A world-leading research facility for safely and ethically realising the full potential of robotics and connected autonomous systems.
The Institute for Safe Autonomy (ISA) at the University of York is a purpose-built research facility on Campus East designed as a “living lab” for robotics and autonomous systems. It integrates laboratories, offices, and indoor–outdoor testing environments, enabling experimentation across air, land, and water systems.
Architecturally, a central atrium introduces natural light and spatial connectivity, while robust materials accommodate robotic movement and impact. Sustainable strategies include high airtightness, thermal mass, and hybrid ventilation. The building supports interdisciplinary collaboration, housing over 100 researchers and combining flexible workspaces with specialised testing facilities to bridge controlled experimentation and real-world application.
