From Goa to Revit: How a T-Level Placement at Race Cottam Architects Helped Shape a Future Career

At Race Cottam Architects, we're passionate about supporting the next generation of designers and built environment professionals. Through our placements, work experience and apprenticeships, we hope that students gain valuable insight into life within an architectural practice, helping them develop skills, confidence and a better understanding of the profession.

We recently caught up with Elias Yeardley our current T-Level apprentice from The Sheffield College for a Q and A to reflect on their placement and what they've learned during their time with us.

Q: What first made you interested in architecture?

A: I've always been interested in the design and creation of buildings and the way they look. A big inspiration for me was visiting Goa in India and seeing the Portuguese colonial architecture there. It made me appreciate how interesting and unique buildings can be.

Have you always wanted to work in architecture?

No! When I was younger, I actually wanted to be a dentist. As I got older, my interests changed and I became much more interested in design, buildings and how places are created.

Q: Why did you choose to do your work experience with us?

A: I wanted a placement that focused on architecture rather than surveying or site work. I was also hoping to improve my Revit skills ahead of my exams and gain experience in a real architectural practice.

Q: What was your first impression of the studio?

A: The office is in a great central location and has a really welcoming atmosphere. I was excited to experience a professional studio environment because most of the other placements on my course were site-based.

Q: What has a typical day been like in the office?

A: Every day has been different. I've helped around the office, supported various projects and worked on my own design project, the Blue Moon Café. I've also been involved in model-making and other creative tasks.

Q: What project have you enjoyed the most?

A: Definitely the Blue Moon Café project. I've worked on it throughout my placement and it's been really interesting to see how much the design has developed over time. It was rewarding to be involved from start to finish.

Q: What new skills have you developed?

A: I've improved my Revit skills by learning more professional ways of using the software. I've also become much more confident presenting my work. During my placement I've delivered three presentations and each one has helped me become more comfortable speaking in front of people.

Q: Has anything surprised you about architecture?

A: I was surprised by how much more there is to architecture than just designing buildings. You have to think about regulations, client requirements, budgets and lots of other factors. It showed me how complex the profession really is.

Q: What has it been like working alongside designers and architects?

A: Everyone has been really helpful and supportive. Whenever I've been stuck, people have taken the time to explain things and give useful feedback. It's been great learning from people who do this every day.

Q: What has been your favourite moment?

A: One of my favourite memories was when Joe spoke to me during my first few days. It helped me feel more comfortable and gave me the confidence to chat with everyone else in the office. I also enjoyed travelling to Manor Sixth Form with Rebecca and Molly. It was a chance to get to know them properly and we had a good laugh.

Q: What has been your biggest challenge?

A: Probably creating the cardboard model for the Blue Moon Café project. I'm not naturally a very crafty person, but it taught me the importance of perseverance and taking the time to get things right.

Q: What achievement are you most proud of?

A: Helping create the paper strips and cardboard bases for Amy and Hazel in preparation for an Aspiration Day at a local school for Years 1 and 2. It felt good knowing that I had contributed something useful and made a positive impact.

Q: Has the placement changed how you think about the future?

A: Definitely. This is the first long-term work experience placement I've completed and it's made me much less nervous about having a future career. I've really enjoyed coming into the office and it's helped me see architecture as something I would like to pursue.

Q: What advice would you give other students who are thinking about undertaking work experience at Race Cottam?

A: Go for it. Architecture placements can be difficult to find, so if you get the opportunity, take it. It's the best way to find out whether it's something you'll enjoy and to learn what the profession is really like.

Q: Finally, Elias, would you recommend a placement with us? And what are your hopes for the future?

A: Yes. I've had the chance to get involved in lots of different activities, work on my own project and learn from a great team. It's been an interesting, varied and fun experience. I hope to pursue a career in architecture. My time at Race Cottam Architects has strengthened my interest in the profession and made me want to continue learning and developing in the field.

We wish Elias every success in his future and it's been great having him part of the team.
