The Brief

Race Cottam Associates was commissioned to prepare outline designs for the site in Rotherham. The response to the detailed brief produced by Rotherham Investment and Development Office (RiDO), was a contemporary design solution using ‘green’ construction techniques.

The Design

The design concept was a simple plan form, based on two curves with a single central circulation spine serving office areas of varying size to each side. The structure is easily read and clearly defined by deep vertical fin walls which emerge on the west elevation. The cross section necessitated the lower ground floor to be accessed from the main car park, due to the change in level across the site.

The Outcome

The east elevation has a gentle curved façade broken down into solid and glazed elements by combining curtain walling and metal cladding panels, adopting a human scale. The west façade is fully glazed with curtain walling running through all levels. The fins, along with a roof overhang, provide solar shading to the glazed elevation.

The roof provides an opportunity to maintain the biodiversity of the site. Gravel and sedum has been used to form a ‘green’ roof.
